Risking Burning Down the House for an Experiment
A rush of cool air buffeted the flames atop the small clutch of candles on our kitchen table this morning. The air escaping from the outside through the door, left ajar for the dogs, pushed the flame away toward the windows facing the dark sky. The candles fluttered, casting a shadow over my warm espresso cup.
A few weeks earlier, my husband and I had breakfast by candlelight in Copenhagen while we attended the Copenhagen documentary festival, CPH:DOX. I had noticed how the morning twilight gradually seeped through the cafe windows. The candles cast enough light to enable us to read menus and enjoy a soothing cappuccino joined with warm croissants. What a tender way to greet the day, I thought.
